It functions as a switching element by being controlled by light. Like normal transistors, phototransistors are available as PNP or NPN. Phototransistors are elements that allow current to flow between the Collector-Emitter when light falls on the base end. Unlike photodiodes, it amplifies the current produced by light. For this reason, phototransistors are much more qualified and functional than photodiodes.
